| Bio: | Name: Shelley St. Peter, formerly Sappha Luxa Date of Birth: May 2nd, 1931 Age: 78 Race/Species: Demon, electricity Hometown: Beaumont, TX Physical description: Shelley used to be homecoming queen. She grew up beautiful, and being pretty has been her career. Her hair is long and dark, and until she hit her sixties a dye bottle never came near it. (And now she deep conditions and goes to a beauty parlor to keep it shiny and silky.) Her body is lean and lithe, her skin pale and virtually flawless. She carries herself with the kind of confidence that only the beutiful and self-aware can. PB: Mary Louise Parker Personality: Shelley is a thrice divorced beauty queen who knows that, with enough honey on your words, you can get almost anything your heart desires. She likes money, she likes to be top dog, and she likes to be desireable. She isn't necessarily shallow or vain, but she understands that sometimes you need to cut someone down to bring yourself up. Beauty and attitude go a long way in her world, as well as the ability to keep up a pleasing facade. She is a loving mother, though as she gets older she is losing her maternal insitnct in trade for the need for excitement. She's been stable and safe, and she's been cared for and treated like a trophy, and now she's looking for someone younger to make her feel powerful and strong. Background: Shelley is descendant from a very old, very powerful and very pureblood demon family from Hell. The family name, Luxa (from "light") is woven into demon history for as long as it has been recorded. At the turn of the 20th Century, members of the Luxa family began talk of moving themselves onto the human plane, believing that the time would soon be coming for demons and humans to interact and live together. This was not an especially popular opinion, but a few other families (or at least, members of families) agreed with the notion and decided to head to the surface and begin the long process of entwining demon culture with human. It was a gradual process, demons leaving in groups to go topside and learn of human culture, then come back with details and observations. Their findings told them that one, the human society is male dominated, that women were docile and well behaved (if they were women worth having), and the only way to be taken seriously was to be well bred and wealthy. (Also typical things, such as humans were foolish and impulsive, lacked patience, and their ideas of brilliance we almost childish endeavors to demons.) In 1945, many demons decided to go topside amidst the confusion and the great homecoming of WWII soldiers. It would seem far less conspicuous for a large community of strangers to suddenly pop up if the same thing was happening all over the country. And so it began, one of the earliest gated communities and one of the first public-yet-private places of refuge for demons on the surface. Shelley had been fourteen when her family moved topside, and changed their family name from Luxa to St. Peter to better fit in with the humans. Her parents were looked down upon by other family members for wanting to go topside, but Shelley was excited to see these human creatures she'd heard so much about. She was mildly disappointed to learn that they looked like demons (for the most part). Quickly after the dust in their gated community had settled, the boys were taken for education in business and manliness (whatever that was) and the girls were escorted to a hybrid finishing school. It was here that Shelley lived for the next fifteen years, learning to control and hide her demon abilities as well as being educated in human etiquette, history, mild politics, social fads, and fashion and beauty. After this finishing school, they were allowed to leave the community to enter the human world around them. And what they came to was unbelieveable. The world had changed around them, but because the demons were so fixated on incorporating themselves so seamlessly into the human world, they had unintentionally cut themselves out of it. Shelley picked a university out west, in southern California. College was almost overwhelming to the group of women who believed that girls were meant to be seen and silent, not loud and opinionated and flaunting their breasts like prize winning pies at county fairs. The newness was too much for Shelley, and it confused her. So she moved back to Texas, staying further west than her hometown but still back where she felt safe. And it was there, in Sweetwater, that she discovered something that defined her life: beauty pageants. Apparently she was incredibly beautiful, and the kind of girls she met there were exactly the kind of people she could handle. She had been training for this sort of thing for half her life. She easily swept local, county, state and even regional pageants. She wanted to go on to compete for Miss Texas and take a shot at Miss USA, but her parents made her quit. She was getting too old, and even though she still looked young, winning a competition that prestigious would draw too much attention to her, and when she looked almost exactly the same in twenty years, the humans would grow suspect. So with a heavy heart, Shelley gave up the crown and instead settled down with a nice man her parents had introduced her to. She had two children with him, Bonnie and Bradley, and with that came PTA meetings and neighborhood watch, and Shelley fell right back into the same circle of girls she'd known before. And she loved it. Being a mother was almost like being a beauty queen- you had to mark your territory and be ruthless while at the same time upkeeping your image as a sweet, kind, gentle girl with old fashioned ideals. Shelley swept the competition in bake sales, fundraisers, field trip chaperoning and getting her daughter involved in local Little Miss pageants. (Much to her dismay, Bonnie had no interest in pursuing pageants after she hit twelve.) But once the kids were grown and she didn't need to be a professional mom anymore, Shelley didn't know what to do with herself. It seemed her simple marriage with a nice young man had run its course, so she divorced him in 1982 and took half of his massive estate and a hefty alimony payment every month. Her next husband was an up and coming yuppie from Connecticut who worked in high risk bonds on Wall Street. He was only a half demon, and fire at that, but it was acceptable enough to her parents. Though when Shelley became pregnant with her third child, Tamara, her family was not as satisfied. Humans were fine in their own way, but not in the pure demon bloodline. This put a bit of a strain on Shelley and Tamara's relationship. Plus, Shelley didn't really want to be a mother again like she had been before. She was a wealthy middle aged wife now, rubbing elbows with the hoi polloi and talking about other women behind their backs. She did love Tamara, but it was a very different relationship than she'd had with Bonnie and Bradley. The older Shelley became, and the more intergrated she got in human culture, the less she cared about being liked and the more she cared about being top dog. When the market crashed in 1987, Shelley started realizing that her husband's "sure thing" career wasn't as solid as he'd indicated, and a year and a half later she filed for divorce, taking his car, his house, custody of their child and their lawyer (who'd taken quite a shine to Shelley). She survived the economic downturn through alimony from both previous husbands and from riding the coattails of elder gentlemen who wanted a pretty woman on their arm. In 1996 Shelley met her third husband, a full human, and while her parents were not in approval, they had just about given up on their daughter at this point. This one was a high priced lawyer who, having seen Shelley's track record with husbands, forced a prenup on her before he agreed to marriage. Even though she cried and accused him of not really loving her, and not trusting her, in the end he got his way and she signed. So with that in mind, Shelley was a bit more determined to keep this spouse happy and make this marriage work. She even opened a small bakery to bring in some income and try and show him she didn't just want him for his money. But after ten years he decided that Shelley was too old for him, and he left her for a younger woman. And since Shelley had been so preoccupied pitching a fit about the prenup when she signed it, she hadn't realized that her husband was well within his legal rights to leave her with almost nothing. All she got were the assets they had acquired while together, which wasn't much. The house she'd gotten from her previous marriage had been signed over to her new husband so the loan would be in his name and therefore refinanced at a better rate, the car had been sold for something more modern and too expensive for her too keep on her own, and the bakery quickly sank in the downturned economy. For the first time in her life, Shelley had no money and no means of support. So after living with Bonnie and her family for a few months, her daughter found her a job at a school where she could utilize one of her only profitable talents- cooking.
